The Heavy Vehicle Use Tax for trucking businesses is due at the end of this month. Yes, another tax on truckers. We have to go find the form 2290 to file this tax of $550 per truck.
But we saw the US Supreme Court decide the case Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo and strike down the Chevron doctrine. According to kiplinger.com,
The Chevron doctrine, derived from a 1984 Supreme Court case, Chevron U.S.A., Inc. v. Natural Resources Defense Council, has been a key principle in administrative law for nearly four decades.
- Chevron established that courts should defer to federal agencies’ interpretations of ambiguous laws as long as those interpretations were reasonable.
- This allowed agencies to use their expertise to fill gaps and create necessary rules when Congress passed laws.
Does this mean that we don’t have to pay HVUT?
Heavy Vehicle Use Tax
The new Supreme Court decision does not overturn the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax. Too bad. We still have to pay it.
But that’s not the only thing going down this month.
CVSA Brake Safety Week is this month, too.
