Yep. It’s true. I forgot it’s an IFTA month. Until yesterday, I forgot that our IFTA filings are due soon. How could I do that? How could I forget one of the most obnoxious, time-consuming tasks that an owner-operator has to do? Since we have TruckingOffice PRO, it’s easy to forget because it’s not obnoxious or time-consuming anymore. (Don’t worry; the IFTA tax rates were updated on time.)
IFTA Month
Four times a year, owner-operators and fleet managers must file IFTA reports and pay the fuel taxes due to the states that they drove through in the past three months. How long does it take you to compute your IFTA bill?
We really hope that no one is trying to do it by hand anymore. Some older truckers talk about hours or a day off the road to compute it, and then they were never comfortable that they’d done it right.
These days, we see several online options for the IFTA computations. Some of them claim to be “free.” A trucker will open their program, enter all the data, and discover that they’ve got to get out their credit card to be able to see the report and the total they owe.
The closest we’ve ever seen to a free IFTA program that’s any good is ours. Because IFTA is only one part of TruckingOffice PRO’s comprehensive trucking software package. Instead of trying to remember to record mileage per state at the state lines, TruckingOffice PRO takes all the data from your dispatch, along with the mileage from PC*Miler, and computes the miles per state.
- NO repeating data entry.
- NO worrying about the tax rates. TruckingOffice updates those percentages every quarter.
- NO surprises. You can run an IFTA report at any time. Do it monthly and set aside the funds you need so that you don’t have to worry about not having enough cash on hand to make the payment at the end of the IFTA month.
No IFTA Month Surprises
If I didn’t use TruckingOffice PRO, forgetting the IFTA filing until the due date would be a crisis. But since the report is always available, I don’t have to worry. I can even do it on the road in my cab. Anywhere that I have internet access, I can run that report and have it done in less than a minute. I can even take care of filing with my smartphone.
No surprises during an IFTA month? Sounds like a great thing to me.
What about you? Are you looking for a stress-free way to get your IFTA data organized? Do you need a way to get your IFTA done for free? Then is what you need a trucking software that will also
- create dispatches and dispatches in a minute?
- track your expenses and revenues per load? per mile? per month?
- remind you of upcoming scheduled maintenance tasks?
- compute your IRP?
- take care of invoices – current and past due?
You can get to the point that you forget it’s an IFTA month too when you use TruckingOffice PRO to run your owner-operator trucking business or small fleet trucking business.
The Free IFTA Offer? Here’s how to use it.
If you have all your data for your IFTA filing, sign up for TruckingOffice’s free trial. You’ll have access to our complete software package. You won’t have to pull out a credit card, debit card, or even a bank account number to use TruckingOffice PRO to compute your IFTA filing. Just enter the data and get the report.
While you’re doing that, you can check out the rest of TruckingOffice PRO’s great trucking software and see how you can benefit from a software for truckers, not an accounting software for an accountant.
Then you won’t worry about an IFTA month either!
I am unfortunately on that does it by hand. I have created a spreadsheet that I enter fuel receipts into after each run. The challenging part is separating the Reefer fuel from the regular fuel. I use to get reports from PEX and Triumph but I went to using a Credit Card for Fuel so there is no report to help me. I’m sure your system is much better than mine.
When you user our system to create invoices it can automatically track the miles by state for IFTA saving you lots of time and agrivation. For the fuel expense you could import them from a spreadsheet after you export them from your credit card. Then the IFTA report and many other reports are just a click away! Yes it is. Enter refer fuel under expenses. Enter diesel under expenses. There you will choose from a drop down box, the truck #, the refer unit #, the state of purchase, enter the odometer reading and so on. If you use multiple filling stations as we do, this is a great help.
This program is a good thing to try. And getting hooked is worth it.
