Indiana IRP
The International Registration Plan (IRP) allows the proportional registration of fleets of vehicles. It provides one registration plate and one cab card for each vehicle in the fleet, which enables them to operate across state lines. These plates are also known as Apportioned Plates. One of the benefits of the IRP is that it eliminates the need for a plate and permit for each state in which the vehicle travels.
Your base state will be responsible for all transactions necessary for IRP fee distributions. Carriers are responsible for registering with their base state and keeping track of mileage. Your IRP fees will vary depending on the jurisdictions traveled.
IRP Indiana Registration
Registering with IRP Indiana is an easy, one-step process. If Indiana is your base jurisdiction, all you need to do is contact them for specific instructions and information. You can find the contact information at the IRP jurisdiction directory online.
Before registering for IRP, you need to know the qualifications. First, in order to claim Indiana as your base jurisdiction, you must have an established place of business with a street address and listed telephone service and be able to provide the names of persons conducting business at the address. Also, all operational records must be maintained and available at this location.
Under the IRP guidelines, vehicles that exceed 26,000 pounds gross vehicle weight, have three or more axles, and travel among two or more jurisdictions (states) must be registered.
Next, you need to obtain a USDOT number. This number is used by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration as a way to identify you and your vehicles. You will also need to receive FMCSA authorization to haul goods and register with the IFTA for fuel tax reporting.
Indiana IRP Renewal
The date for your renewal is shown on the cab card you received after registering with IRP. You will receive a notice of the pending renewal approximately three months before the due date. The notice will include all pertinent information needed for renewing your IRP plate. To give you an idea of what to expect, here are some of the items you’ll need for IRP renewal:
- A copy of the vehicle title or application for title if ownership has changed.
- A copy of the valid Authority Lease Agreement if you are not the Motor Carrier Responsible for Safety.
- Vehicles registered at 55,000 pounds or more: Federal Schedule 1 is required.
- Form 2290 – Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax Return.
- Schedule B – Revenue International Registration Plan.
The renewal application should be received by the IRP at least 30 days before the due date. Payments received after the due date will incur penalties. The next step is then getting IRP plates Indiana.
