New Hampshire IRP Information
What is IRP for trucking? The International Registration Plan was created to help truckers by simplifying the process of collecting and distributing registration fees. An IRP apportioned plate allows truckers to operate in two or more member jurisdictions in the U.S, District of Columbia, and Canadian provinces.
New Hampshire IRP Registration
Before applying for an IRP registration, you need to make sure you meet specific qualifications. You will need to obtain a USDOT number, and determine if you need a UCR permit. Am IFTA permit is also required by all motor carriers.
You will also need proof that you have an established place of business in New Hampshire. The business must be a physical structure with a listed telephone number and street address and is open during regular business hours. Also, all operational records must be maintained and can be made available at this establishment.
IRP guidelines stipulate that a qualifying vehicle is one that:
- Is primarily used to transport people or property and travels outside New Hampshire.
- Has a power unit with two or more axles and a GVW that exceeds 26,000 pounds, or
- Has three or more axles regardless of weight, or
- Is used in combination when the weight of such combination exceeds 26,000 pounds.
Other forms may be required. You can find a list here.
IRP registration fees vary by state and are determined by the number of miles driven in each jurisdiction and the type of vehicle you operate.
When your registration is approved, you’ll receive one IRP apportioned plate and cab card for each vehicle in your fleet.
Renewing Your New Hampshire IRP Plates
The IRP office will notify you of the upcoming renewal about 90 days before the due date. The notice will include all information necessary for the process. Renewal applications must be received by the IRP at least 30 days before the due date to avoid penalties or fines.
An application for renewal cannot be approved if you are not current with IFTA quarterly taxes and previous year IRP fees. You will also need to keep track of all mileage accrued in each jurisdiction during the past year.
Renewals can be submitted by mail, in person at an IRP office, or online. You can contact your base jurisdiction for more information about the renewal.
On the surface, applying for an IRP plate seems fairly straightforward, but the more you research, the more confusing it gets. And, it looks as if you’ll be spending a lot of your valuable time filling out forms, filing reports, and keeping track of numerous documents.
